Suresh Triveni Reflects on 'Maa Behen': A Joyous Chaos and Hints at Future Projects

After making a splash in the Indian film industry with his acclaimed feature debut ‘Tumhari Sulu’ in 2017, director Suresh Triveni is back with his latest venture, ‘Maa Behen’. This film, now streaming on Netflix, marks a return to the humor-filled narratives that spotlight strong female characters, a hallmark of Triveni’s storytelling style.

Set against a vibrant, pulp-inspired backdrop, ‘Maa Behen’ features a stellar cast including the legendary Madhuri Dixit, who portrays a disreputable single mother. Alongside her, rising stars Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga take on the roles of her beleaguered daughters. The film’s plot thickens when a dead body unexpectedly appears in the family’s living room, forcing this tumultuous trio to band together. Joining them are Ravi Kishan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, and Arunoday Singh, each adding layers of complexity and humor to the narrative.

In an exclusive conversation with Scroll, Triveni shared insights into the film’s reception and what it means to him. “The response has been nothing short of overwhelming. My phone has been constantly buzzing with messages and calls from friends and fans alike,” he noted. This reaction is not just a testament to the film’s entertainment value but also to its ability to spark discussions among viewers about its themes, characters, and artistic choices.

The film was shot in a remarkably concise timeframe of just 41 days, with most scenes filmed on set rather than in outdoor locations. This meticulous approach reflects Triveni’s dedication to crafting a cohesive and engaging story. “We made a very conscious effort to create an immersive world for our characters, ensuring that every element served the narrative,” he explained.

As ‘Maa Behen’ continues to garner attention, fans are left wondering if a sequel might be in the works. Triveni, while not confirming anything, hinted at the possibility, saying, “I love the characters we’ve created, and the discussions around them could certainly lead to more stories. It’s always a joy to explore the lives of such vibrant personalities.” Given the film’s enthusiastic reception, audiences will undoubtedly be eager for any news regarding future projects from this talented filmmaker.
