Telangana High Court Grants Pawan Khera One Week of Transit Anticipatory Bail Amid Assam FIR Controversy

In a significant legal development, the Telangana High Court has granted Congress leader Pawan Khera a one-week transit anticipatory bail in connection with a forgery and criminal conspiracy case filed against him by Assam Police. The case has garnered public attention due to its political implications and the involvement of prominent figures, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.

Justice K Sujana, who presided over the case, stated that the grant of transit anticipatory bail serves as a temporary shield from arrest, allowing Khera the necessary time to approach the appropriate court in Assam to seek further relief. The court’s decision is crucial for Khera, who had sought this bail following the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against him after he made serious allegations about Riniki Bhuyan Sarma’s alleged possession of multiple foreign passports.

Khera’s claims surfaced during a public address when he asserted that he had documentary evidence proving that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds passports from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. This assertion led to an uproar, as the Sarma couple vehemently denied the allegations, calling them unfounded. The FIR was subsequently filed at the Crime Branch Police Station in Guwahati, which has since intensified the scrutiny surrounding Khera and his allegations.

During the court proceedings, Justice Sujana raised questions about Khera’s decision to file for bail in Telangana instead of his home state of Delhi or the state where the case originated, Assam. The Assam Advocate General, Devajit Saikia, echoed these sentiments, questioning Khera’s rationale for seeking judicial relief far from the locus of the alleged offense. This situation highlights the complexities of legal jurisdiction and the strategic decisions often made in politically sensitive cases.

The political landscape in India has been rife with tensions as opposition parties, including the Congress, continue to challenge ruling government figures on various fronts. Khera’s case not only underscores the volatile nature of Indian politics but also exemplifies how allegations can ripple through the political fabric, influencing public opinion and party dynamics. As Khera prepares to present his case in Assam, the outcome may have far-reaching implications for his political career and the Congress party’s standing in the region.
