Tennis Star Leander Paes Joins BJP, Aims to Drive Change in West Bengal

In a significant political move ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, renowned tennis player Leander Paes has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His induction took place on Tuesday at the party headquarters in New Delhi and is seen as a strategic addition by the BJP as they gear up for a pivotal election.

Following his joining, the West Bengal unit of the BJP took to social media to announce, “From global courts to national commitment, another voice backs the call for poriborton [change] in West Bengal.” This statement encapsulates the party’s aim of leveraging Paes’ star power to galvanize support in the state, which has been a political battleground in recent years.

Paes, who has previously aligned himself with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2021 during the Goa Assembly elections, expressed his enthusiasm for his new role within the BJP. He emphasized that he saw this as a unique opportunity to serve his country and contribute to the growth of youth, especially through sports. In his statement, he expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other BJP leaders for their support and mentorship.

The induction of Paes into the BJP has not been without controversy. The TMC quickly dismissed his move, labeling it as the BJP “parachuting” another “bohiragoto” (outsider) into West Bengal politics. This response highlights the ongoing friction between the two parties, particularly as the state prepares for elections that could significantly alter its political landscape.

Leander Paes, born in Kolkata in 1973, is celebrated as one of India’s most accomplished tennis players, having clinched a remarkable 18 Grand Slam titles in both men’s and mixed doubles categories, alongside a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. His athletic achievements have made him a household name in India, and his shift to politics is seen as a potential game-changer for the BJP in West Bengal.

With his strong ties to the sports community and a focus on youth engagement, Paes may attract a younger demographic to the BJP’s fold. As the political atmosphere in West Bengal heats up, all eyes will be on how Paes leverages his influence to help the party in its quest for a transformative change in the state.
