The ULFA attacked a commando camp in Assam at midnight with grenades and heavy fire
March 23 – 2026 :
A militant attack took place in Jagun under Margherita constituency of Tinsukia district Assam 21 March night before Assembly elections in the state. In these attacks the ambush targeted the Assam Police commando camp 10 kms from Jagun and caused serious security concerns across southern Assam. The attack took place at midnight amid the election campaign in the state. According to sources, a well-organized armed group of militants suddenly threw five grenades and rocket-applied grenades at the commando camp at around 2 pm yesterday. The midnight silence was broken by the loud sound of explosions that shook the entire area.
The commandos in the camp realized the seriousness of the situation and immediately responded with courage. The clashes and heavy gunfire between the two sides lasted for about half an hour, temporarily turning the entire area into a battlefield. After the clashes, the militants managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness of the dense forests and the rains that have been falling since night. Four Assam Police commandos were seriously injured in the clash. The injured soldiers were identified as Chitraranjan Milli (Jorhat), Devashish Bora (Jorhat), Robi Garh (Chabua) and Jambuch Marak (Goalpara) respectively. One of the injured soldiers was shifted to Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh for further treatment.
According to a source the methodology, weapons used and timing of the attack exactly matched the previous attacks by the ULPHA (Swadhin). The well-planned attack targeting security forces just before the Assembly elections has sparked strong reactions in both political and security circles. Experts believe that the main objective of the militants is to create an atmosphere of fear in the minds of voters in the run-up to the elections.
On the other hand, United Liberation front of Assam,(ULFA) Swadhin group has claimed that it launched a military operation against a commando camp of the Assam police at 10 miles from Jagun in Tinsukia district. The organization called the operation ‘Operation BUJANI’. ULFA’s publicity secretary Major Nirnaya Assam said in a statement that the raid was conducted by members of their Thalgiri Swadeshi Senani at around 2 pm yesterday. According to the ULFA (Sswadhin), this is not an ordinary attack, but a ‘warning’ to the Assam police. The ULFA (Swadhin) has called the Assam government a ‘puppet government’ for all these incidents and blamed it equally for the attacks. The ULFA group said it had no personal enmity with the Assam police, but if the police continued to show their ‘heroism’, the situation would get worse in the future. The union said it had issued this final warning to the Assam police to refrain from such atrocities in the coming days.
