The political landscape in West Bengal is heating up as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) intensifies its calls for the removal of the returning officer for the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, just weeks ahead of the critical state elections. The TMC has formally approached the Election Commission, seeking the immediate dismissal of Surajit Roy, citing concerns over his alleged close ties with BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.
In a representation delivered to West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the TMC expressed serious apprehensions about Roy’s ability to conduct free and fair elections. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is poised to battle Adhikari for the Bhabanipur seat, making the stakes particularly high for both parties. The TMC’s accusations hinge on what they describe as Roy’s “documented and close association” with Adhikari, who is the leader of the opposition in the state.
The TMC initially raised concerns regarding Roy’s appointment as the returning officer on March 24, emphasizing that his connections could compromise the integrity of the electoral process. TMC national working committee member and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien highlighted the potential for bias given that Adhikari is vying for the same constituency. O’Brien stressed that the Election Commission had previously mandated that officers with political affiliations should not be appointed to oversee elections in constituencies where their associates are contesting.
With the West Bengal elections scheduled to be conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29, and the results to be declared on May 4, the TMC’s appeal to the Election Commission comes at a critical juncture. The party believes that the integrity of the electoral process must be maintained to ensure a level playing field, especially as Mamata Banerjee gears up to defend her seat against a formidable opponent.
The tensions between the TMC and BJP have been palpable in the state, with both parties engaging in a war of words as the election date approaches. The TMC’s allegations against Roy reflect broader concerns within the party about the influence of the BJP in West Bengal, especially after the BJP’s significant gains in the state during the last national elections. As the political drama unfolds, all eyes will be on the Election Commission’s response to the TMC’s demands and how it will impact the upcoming elections.
