TMC Leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray Resigns from Rajya Sabha and Party Amid Political Turmoil

In a significant political shift, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, a prominent leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), announced his resignation from the Rajya Sabha and officially left the party on Monday. This move comes in the wake of the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, where Ray acknowledged a considerable mandate given to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by voters, signaling a change in the political landscape of the state.

Ray, who has served as a Rajya Sabha member since 2011, expressed that the electorate had decisively chosen the BJP to end what he described as a “15-year anarchical rule” of the TMC, marked by rampant corruption and failure across various sectors such as health, education, and employment. He emphasized that the new government was initiating steps aimed at the “overall development and reconstruction” of West Bengal, thus aligning himself with the BJP’s vision for the state’s future.

The recent elections witnessed a substantial victory for the BJP, which secured 207 out of 294 assembly seats, far exceeding the 148 seats required for a majority. In stark contrast, the TMC was reduced to a mere 80 seats, leading to questions about the party’s stability and unity. The internal strife within the TMC has been exacerbated by the claims of Ritabrata Banerjee, an expelled MLA, who stated that a faction of 58 TMC legislators had formed their own legislative wing in the assembly. This divide is perceived as a direct challenge to TMC leader Mamata Banerjee’s authority, who has been supporting Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the opposition leader.

In response to these growing tensions, the TMC has taken drastic measures, dissolving all its committees and organizational units across the state. This move is seen as an attempt to reestablish control and address the dissent within the party ranks. Political analysts suggest that Ray’s resignation might further deepen the rifts within the TMC, raising concerns about its future in West Bengal’s political arena.

As the political climate in West Bengal continues to evolve, the implications of these developments will undoubtedly resonate throughout the state’s governance and party dynamics. Observers are keenly watching how the TMC will navigate these challenges and whether it can regain its footing in the wake of this seismic shift.
