Starting April 10, 2026, all National Highway toll plazas in India will go fully digital, stopping all cash payments to reduce congestion. Drivers must use FASTag or UPI, with penalties of 1.25 times the standard toll rate for vehicles without valid, functional FASTags.
Key Changes in Toll Plaza Rules (April 2026):
100% Digital Shift: Cash is no longer accepted. Only FASTag or UPI via scanning can be used for payments.
Penalty for No/Invalid FASTag: If your FASTag is not working or absent, you must pay via UPI but will be charged 1.25 times (1.25x) the normal toll fee.
E-Notice System: Vehicles attempting to evade tolls will receive automatic, digital notices. If not paid within 72 hours, additional penalties will apply.
No Personal Exemptions: The new rules tighten controls on exemptions, removing perks that previously allowed some individuals to use personal vehicles with exemptions.
Objective: The move, announced by NHAI (National Highways Authority of India), aims to create a seamless, non-stop experience at plazas by removing manual cash handling.
