Tragedy in Oman: Two Indians Killed in Drone Strike as Rupee Hits Historic Low

In a devastating incident, two Indian nationals lost their lives in a drone attack in Sohar province, Oman, while ten others sustained injuries. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that five of the injured have been discharged from medical facilities, and the rest are currently under treatment. Notably, a non-Indian was also among those hurt. Indian officials are collaborating closely with their Omani counterparts to provide support to the affected citizens.

Meanwhile, the Indian stock market faced a significant downturn amid escalating tensions in West Asia and soaring global oil prices. On Friday, both the benchmark Sensex and Nifty indices plummeted by nearly 2%, marking the worst week for the markets in the past four years. Investors saw almost Rs 20 lakh crore evaporate from their wealth. The Indian rupee, reflecting the nation’s economic strain, fell to an alarming record low of 92.4 against the US dollar, a decline of 1.5% since the onset of the conflict.

Adding to the woes, the benchmark Brent crude oil price surged past $100 per barrel, a stark increase from approximately $72.8 per barrel recorded just before the conflict began on February 27. These developments have raised concerns about the rising cost of living and inflationary pressures in India.

In response to these troubling trends, the Union government acknowledged issues surrounding the supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the country. However, Sujata Sharma, the joint secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, reassured the public that none of the distributors have completely run out of stocks. This statement comes as many citizens are anxious about securing necessary fuel supplies amidst the ongoing crisis.

The convergence of these events highlights the multifaceted challenges facing India today, both externally with geopolitical tensions and internally with economic stability. As the nation navigates through these turbulent times, the hope remains that stability can be restored soon.
