Tragic Attack in Manipur Claims Three Lives, Houses Torched in Kangpokpi District

In a harrowing incident that has sent shockwaves through Manipur, three Kuki civilians lost their lives in a suspected militant attack in the Kangpokpi district early Friday morning. The attack took place around 4 AM in the village of Loibol Khullen, where at least seven houses were reported burned down, confirming the grim news was a senior police officer, as reported by Scroll.

The deceased have been identified as Letkhongam Haokip, Tinmary Haokip, and Jangminlal Haokip, all local residents of the village. Eyewitness accounts and reports indicate that heavy gunfire erupted during a clash between rival groups, forcing villagers to flee amidst chaos and destruction.

The Kuki Inpi Manipur, which serves as an apex body for Kuki tribes in the region, has condemned the violence, stating that the attack represents a serious breach of human rights and dignity. “The systematic killing of innocent people and the burning of homes are acts that cannot be overlooked,” the organization stated, emphasizing the need for accountability.

Allegations have emerged suggesting that the assault was executed by heavily armed members of two Naga groups, although these groups have yet to respond to the claims. In light of this tragic event, Kuki Inpi Manipur has called upon the Union government and local security forces to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those behind the attack, and ensure that they face justice.

This incident adds to the ongoing tensions in Manipur, a state that has been grappling with ethnic conflicts for years. The call for increased security measures in vulnerable areas is underscored by the necessity to protect local communities from further violence. As the situation unfolds, the government’s response will be closely watched by citizens who seek justice and peace in a region marked by turmoil.
