In a shocking incident on Friday, two Indian nationals lost their lives and ten others sustained injuries in a drone attack in Sohar province, Oman. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India confirmed the casualties, highlighting the grim nature of the ongoing conflict in the West Asia region.
Aseem Mahajan, Additional Secretary (Gulf) at the MEA, reported that five of the injured individuals have already been released from the hospital, while the rest are still receiving medical care. Among the injured is one non-Indian citizen, indicating the broader impact of the attack.
According to local media, two drones were involved in the assault. One drone targeted the Al-Awahi industrial area, leading to the fatalities and injuries, whereas the second drone crashed in an uninhabited area, fortunately causing no further harm. Omani authorities have since initiated an investigation to determine the source of these drone strikes.
This incident follows a series of escalating tensions in the region, marked recently by drone attacks on fuel storage tanks at Salalah port, an event that Iran has denied involvement in. The backdrop of this violence can be traced to the intensifying conflict that erupted on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran, prompting Tehran’s retaliatory measures involving missiles and drones aimed at targets in the Gulf.
The Indian government is actively engaging with Omani officials to ensure the safety of its citizens in the wake of this tragic event. As details emerge, the situation remains a stark reminder of the chaos that continues to unfold in West Asia, influencing lives far beyond its geographical boundaries.
