In a devastating turn of events, sixteen individuals have tragically succumbed to heatstroke across seven districts in Telangana, as reported by the Deccan Herald. The state’s Revenue Minister, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, confirmed the grim statistics on Saturday, highlighting the severe impact of the soaring temperatures.
District reports reveal the distribution of fatalities, with four lives lost in Jayashankar Bhupalpally, three in Warangal Urban, and three more in Karimnagar and Nizamabad. Additionally, one death occurred in each of the districts of Jogulamba Gadwal, Rangareddy, and Suryapet. In response to this alarming situation, Minister Reddy has mandated a compensation of ₹4 lakh for each victim’s family, urging immediate disbursement of the funds to provide some relief.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings regarding the intensifying heatwave conditions across Telangana, forecasting further increases in temperature over the coming days. In light of these predictions, Minister Reddy has instructed district collectors to keep a vigilant watch on the situation. He emphasized the importance of preparedness, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and outdoor workers, who are at heightened risk during the peak heat hours.
As part of a broader trend, the IMD also indicated that much of central and northwest India is likely to experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions for the next week. Meanwhile, regions in eastern and peninsular India are expected to endure high temperatures for three to five days. The forecast suggests a potential relief with a reduction in maximum temperatures starting from May 29 onwards.
In the national capital, Delhi, temperatures are projected to range between 43°C and 45°C, adding to the distressing heatwave scenario. The current situation underscores the urgent need for public awareness and proactive measures to safeguard health and well-being during this extreme weather. The government and local authorities are emphasizing the importance of hydration and limited outdoor activities during peak temperature times to mitigate health risks.
