Tragic Toll: Over 731 Lives Lost in Manipur Relief Camps Amid Ongoing Ethnic Strife

At least 731 internally displaced individuals have tragically lost their lives in relief camps across Manipur since the onset of ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023. This alarming statistic was revealed through information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act and reported by the Times of India on Sunday. The grim data, which sheds light on the dire humanitarian situation, was shared by the state’s home department following a directive from the Manipur Information Commission.

The statistics gathered from various district administrations highlight the severe impact of the conflict on the displaced population, with fatalities recorded in nine districts. Churachandpur, the district most affected, has reported the highest death toll at 248, followed closely by Bishnupur with 151 fatalities. Other districts such as Kangpokpi (128), Imphal West (94), Kakching (60), Imphal East (25), Jiribam (13), Thoubal (11), and Tengnoupal (1) also contributed to this harrowing count. Additionally, the data indicates that there have been 25 unnatural deaths among the displaced, with Churachandpur again taking the lead with six such incidents.

The statistics paint a broader picture of the ongoing crisis in Manipur. Nearly three years after the initial outbreak of violence, over 43,000 people continue to live in makeshift shelters, facing dire living conditions and uncertain futures. The prolonged displacement has raised significant concerns about the safety and well-being of these individuals, especially in light of the reported unnatural deaths which include drownings, electrocution, and even cases of sexual assault that have led to arrests.

Imphal West also reported four unnatural deaths, including two by hanging, highlighting the mental and emotional toll the conflict has taken on the displaced individuals. The struggle for survival in relief camps, compounded by psychological distress, presents a challenging reality for many families forced to flee their homes amidst violence.

This disturbing revelation has sparked calls for greater accountability and action from the state and central governments. Activists and social workers have been vocal about the urgent need for improved conditions in relief camps, as well as the necessity to address the root causes of the ethnic tensions that led to such widespread violence in the first place. The ongoing situation in Manipur serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of peace and the importance of humanitarian assistance in conflict-affected areas.
