Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi to Contest Independently in Puducherry Polls, Backs Congress-DMK Alliance in Other Seats

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) party has announced its decision to independently contest the upcoming Assembly elections in Puducherry, a significant move as the political landscape heats up ahead of the polls scheduled for April 9. Led by Thol Thirumavalavan, the party revealed its intent to field candidates in three constituencies: Ossudu, Nettappakkam, and Uzhavarkarai. In contrast, VCK will extend its support to candidates from the Congress-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance in the remaining 27 constituencies.

In a statement, Thirumavalavan emphasized the party’s choice to contest independently, citing a lack of clarity regarding the constituencies allocated to them by their allies. “We have already submitted our nominations for the three constituencies we intend to contest alone,” he noted. As the deadline for withdrawing candidacies approaches this Thursday, the political atmosphere is charged with anticipation.

The upcoming elections in Puducherry mark a critical juncture for all parties involved. VCK, which is also part of the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu, is currently engaged in seat-sharing negotiations. Thirumavalavan reflected on past electoral experiences, revealing that in the 2021 elections, VCK was allotted only one seat by Congress, a situation they accepted to maintain harmony within the alliance. Despite the limitations, VCK managed to secure over 6,000 votes, demonstrating their grassroots support.

Thirumavalavan’s remarks indicate that the VCK is keen to assert its political identity this time around. The decision to contest in three seats alone underscores their desire for greater autonomy in influencing the political narrative in Puducherry. The broader context of this electoral strategy unfolds against the backdrop of a fragmented political scenario where coalitions and alliances have become essential for electoral success.

As the political dynamics continue to evolve, all eyes will be on the counting of votes scheduled for May 4, which will determine the fate of not just VCK but also the Congress-DMK alliance in Puducherry. The results will have implications beyond the immediate electoral outcomes, potentially influencing party strategies and alliances in future elections.
