Violent Clash Erupts in Odisha as Residents Protest Vedanta's Mining Road Project

In a significant escalation of tensions between local communities and law enforcement, more than 50 police officers and numerous residents sustained injuries during a violent confrontation in Odisha’s Rayagada district on Tuesday. The clash arose amid ongoing protests against the construction of a road aimed at facilitating access to Vedanta Limited’s proposed bauxite mining operation in the ecologically sensitive Sijimali hills.

The incident took place in Sagabari village, located in the Kashipur block, where residents have been vocally opposing a nearly three-kilometer road that connects Purlong to Sagabari Ghat. This road is crucial for the mining activities planned by Vedanta, which won the bauxite block in an auction earlier this year. Critics argue that the project threatens the local environment and disrupts the livelihoods of indigenous communities.

The tensions escalated when a police team arrived in the area early Tuesday morning to execute a non-bailable arrest warrant for Sudarshan Majhi, a local leader known for his staunch opposition to the mining project. Majhi is wanted in connection with 14 criminal cases, including serious charges such as attempted murder, according to Rayagada Superintendent of Police Swathy S Kumar. As the police attempted to apprehend Majhi, they were met with fierce resistance from a large group of local residents, leading to a chaotic situation.

Superintendent Kumar reported that the police found themselves surrounded and attacked, making it increasingly difficult to withdraw safely. In the ensuing chaos, 58 police personnel, including a Sub-Divisional Officer, were injured, with six officers requiring urgent medical attention and being transported to hospitals in Visakhapatnam due to the severity of their injuries. The police, in an effort to regain control, resorted to using tear gas and lathi charges to disperse the agitated crowd.

This incident highlights the growing resistance among local communities against large-scale mining projects and raises questions about the balance between economic development and environmental protection. Adivasi residents have consistently voiced their concerns regarding the adverse impacts of mining on their lands, culture, and way of life. As the situation unfolds, it remains crucial for authorities and stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue with the affected communities to address their grievances and seek sustainable solutions that respect their rights and protect their environment.
