West Bengal Electoral Roll Revision: 91 Lakh Voters Removed Ahead of Assembly Elections

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, approximately 91 lakh voters have been purged from the voter lists in West Bengal. This action forms part of a special intensive revision of the state’s electoral rolls, as reported by The Statesman, citing the Election Commission’s data.

This extensive exercise has led to the removal of nearly 11.9% of the electorate, which numbers around 7.6 crore in West Bengal prior to the revision process. The initiative was concluded after a thorough adjudication phase, where judicial officers assessed roughly 60 lakh claims and objections raised during the revision.

The outcome of this adjudication revealed that more than 27 lakh voters were categorized as “excludable,” resulting in their deletion from the voter lists. The Chief Electoral Officer’s office confirmed that judicial officers have finalized and signed off on decisions regarding 59.8 lakh cases, marking a significant step in refining the electoral process in the state.

For those voters who found themselves removed during this intensive scrutiny, there remains a recourse available; they can appeal their deletions in one of the 19 tribunals established specifically for this purpose. This aspect of the process is crucial, as it provides an opportunity for individuals to contest decisions that may have affected their eligibility to vote.

Moreover, the process of applying e-signatures by judicial officers is still ongoing, with approximately 22,163 cases yet to be completed. This indicates that the total number of deletions could potentially increase, once the final confirmations are made. Notably, the districts with the highest number of deletions are predominantly Muslim-dominated areas, raising questions about the implications of these cuts for specific communities within the state.

The revision of the electoral rolls is a critical exercise that not only seeks to maintain the integrity of the electoral process but also ensures that eligible voters are accurately represented. As West Bengal gears up for the Assembly elections, the effects of this comprehensive voter roll revision will undoubtedly be closely monitored by political analysts and parties alike.
