West Bengal, May 24: The West Bengal government has announced a free bus travel scheme for women across state-run bus services, which is scheduled to come into effect from June 1. The initiative aims to improve access to public transport and reduce travel expenses for women across the state.
According to the Transport Department notification issued on May 21, women passengers will be allowed to travel free of cost on various categories of government-operated buses. The proposal reportedly received approval from the State Finance Department on May 16 and was later cleared by the state cabinet.
Scheme Applicable Across State-Run Bus Services
Officials stated that the free travel facility will apply to multiple categories of state-run buses, including local and long-distance services operating under the state transport network.
The government said the initiative has been introduced to make public transport more accessible and affordable for women commuters.
Smart Card System To Be Introduced
To implement the scheme, authorities plan to introduce a smart card-based system for eligible women passengers. The proposed smart card is expected to include a QR code, photograph, and identification details of the beneficiary.
Women seeking the smart card may submit applications at the offices of the Block Development Officer (BDO) or Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) in their respective areas.
Applicants may be required to submit a recent passport-size photograph along with a valid identity proof such as Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, PAN Card, Passport, Ration Card, Driving License, Ayushman Bharat card, government-issued service ID, or educational institution ID card.
Temporary Arrangement Before Smart Card Distribution
Officials said that until the smart cards are issued, women passengers can avail the free travel facility by showing a valid photo identity card to bus conductors.
After verification, conductors will issue a zero-value or thermal paper ticket for the journey.
The scheme is expected to benefit women commuters across urban and rural areas of West Bengal once implemented from June 1.
