Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh: A worker’s death at a power plant operated by Adani Power in the Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh triggered violent protests by labourers, leading to vandalism and a tense law-and-order situation inside the industrial facility. Authorities have since deployed police forces and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Incident Triggers Unrest
The unrest occurred at the Bandhaura power plant located in Singrauli, a region widely known as one of India’s major energy hubs due to its large coal reserves and concentration of thermal power plants.
According to initial reports, a worker identified as Lallan Singh, originally from the Garhwa district of Jharkhand, died after reportedly falling ill while on duty at the plant late Friday night.
Plant officials said the worker’s health deteriorated suddenly and he was later declared dead. While early indications suggest the possibility of a cardiac arrest, authorities said the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after a post-mortem examination.
The body was sent to the Baidhan Trauma Centre in Singrauli for medical examination.
Workers Protest Death
News of the worker’s death spread quickly among labourers employed at the facility, many of whom are migrant and contract workers. By Saturday morning, groups of workers gathered within the plant premises demanding answers regarding the circumstances of the death.
Protesters reportedly alleged that there was a **lack of transparency about the incident** and raised concerns about working conditions and emergency medical response.
The protest gradually intensified as workers demanded compensation for the deceased worker’s family and accountability from the management.
Violence Breaks Out
The demonstration soon turned violent as angry workers began vandalising property inside the plant complex.
Eyewitness accounts and reports from local officials indicated that protesters:
Damaged several vehicles parked inside the plant premises Smashed the windshield of a police vehicle Set fire to some property inside the facility Attempted to storm administrative areas of the plant
The violence created panic among staff and temporarily disrupted activities at the power plant.
Police Restore Order
Following the escalation, police and district officials rushed to the site to control the situation. Security personnel were deployed in large numbers around the plant to prevent further clashes.
Authorities said the situation was eventually brought under control after police intervention.
Officials also stated that CCTV footage and video recordings are being examined to identify those involved in vandalism and arson during the protest.
Investigation Underway
District authorities confirmed that an investigation into the worker’s death is ongoing.
Officials said that while preliminary reports suggest a medical emergency, the **post-mortem report will determine the exact cause of death**. The administration has assured that appropriate action will be taken if any negligence is found.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies are also investigating the violent incidents that occurred during the protest.
Industrial Hub with Labour Challenges
Singrauli, located on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, is often referred to as India’s “Energy Capital” because of its vast coal reserves and large thermal power plants operated by both public and private companies.
The region employs thousands of contract labourers, many of whom migrate from states such as Jharkhand, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh for work in coal mines, construction projects, and power plants.
However, labour disputes and safety concerns occasionally surface in the region due to the scale of industrial operations and dependence on contract workers.
Current Situation
As of the latest reports, the situation at the power plant has stabilized, though security remains tight in and around the facility.
Workers are continuing to demand compensation and support for the family of the deceased labourer, while authorities await the results of the medical examination to determine the cause of death.
Officials say further action will depend on the findings of the investigation, which is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding both the worker’s death and the subsequent violence at the plant.
