Statue of Jawaharlal Nehru Vandalised in Pailapool, Cachar, Assam
Silchar, Feb 24:
A statue of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, was allegedly vandalised by unidentified miscreants at Pailapool in Lakhipur sub-division of Cachar district, Assam, late Monday night.
The incident occurred at a four-way junction in the Pailapool market area. Residents discovered the statue uprooted and lying beside its pedestal early Tuesday morning, leading to widespread outrage.
According to reports published on February 25 in The Times of India and The New Indian Express, unidentified miscreants allegedly used an excavator to pull down the statue during the intervening night of February 23 and 24.
Police teams reached the spot after being alerted and have launched an investigation. Authorities are examining CCTV footage from nearby shops and establishments to identify those involved in the act.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions from local residents and political parties, particularly the Congress, who condemned the vandalism and demanded strict action against the culprits. Community leaders have urged the administration to restore the statue at the earliest and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
Security has been tightened in the area as officials appealed to the public to maintain peace while the probe continues.
