Centre Forms Expert Committee to Reassess Controversial Judiciary Corruption Chapter in NCERT Textbook

The Indian government has established a committee to critically review a contentious chapter on corruption within the judiciary, as stated in a recent submission to the Supreme Court. This move comes after the controversial content was part of a Class 8 social science textbook published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), which had drawn considerable backlash and prompted judicial scrutiny.

The committee’s formation was announced by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who informed the Supreme Court that the panel would include distinguished former Supreme Court justices, namely Indu Malhotra and Aniruddha Bose, alongside former Attorney General KK Venugopal. Notably, Justice Bose is currently the director of the National Judicial Academy, lending additional expertise to the committee’s deliberations.

The chapter in question, titled “Corruption in the Judiciary,” was originally included in the textbook “Exploring Society: India and Beyond.” It identified various forms of corruption that plague the judicial system, raising alarms about the integrity of one of India’s foundational institutions. Following the Supreme Court’s intervention, the NCERT decided to withdraw the textbook from circulation, halting its publication and re-printing altogether. This decision came after the court took suo motu cognizance of the situation, expressing considerable concern over the implications of the content.

On March 10, the NCERT publicly apologized for the chapter, acknowledging its inappropriateness and the potential harm it could cause to the perception of the judiciary among young learners. The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, has since disposed of the suo motu case after the committee’s formation was confirmed, indicating a more structured path forward in addressing the issue.

This chapter’s fall from grace reflects broader concerns regarding educational materials in India and the need to ensure that they present a balanced and factual representation of sensitive topics. The controversy has spurred discussions about the role of educational bodies in shaping societal perceptions and the potential repercussions of including unverified or contentious viewpoints in textbooks.

As the committee embarks on its review, there is significant public interest in the outcome, shaping the future of how such important issues are taught to students. The hope is that this initiative will lead to a more nuanced understanding of the judiciary, while also reinforcing the integrity and trustworthiness of educational resources in the country.
