Congress to Challenge Gauhati HC Ruling Denying Anticipatory Bail for Pawan Khera in SC

The political landscape in India is witnessing yet another significant contest as the Congress party has announced its intention to challenge the Gauhati High Court’s recent decision, which denied anticipatory bail to its senior leader, Pawan Khera. This legal battle is rooted in allegations of defamation, forgery, and conspiracy, brought against Khera by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the spouse of Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma.

On Saturday, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh expressed unwavering support for Khera via social media, stating, “We stand solidly in solidarity with @Pawankhera, the Chairman of our Media and Publicity Department. We believe that justice will prevail over the politics of threat, intimidation, and harassment.” This statement underscores the party’s commitment to defending its leaders against what they perceive as politically motivated charges.

The controversy ignited when Khera publicly claimed, during an event on April 5, that he possessed documents indicating that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma held passports from multiple countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. These assertions have been firmly denied by both the Chief Minister and his wife, who allege that Khera’s statements are based on fabricated evidence. Following this, a complaint was lodged, prompting the Assam Police to initiate legal proceedings against Khera.

As political tensions escalate, the situation has drawn considerable attention. The Gauhati High Court’s denial of anticipatory bail on Friday marked a notable juncture for Khera, who has maintained his innocence. Khera’s legal team is now preparing to take the case to the Supreme Court, aiming for a favorable ruling that would allow him to evade arrest amidst these serious allegations.

This incident highlights the ongoing friction between the Congress party and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam. The allegations against Khera, seen by many in the Congress as an attempt to silence dissent and undermine their political narrative, reflect broader concerns about the use of law enforcement for political purposes. As the Supreme Court prepares to review the appeal, all eyes will be on the unfolding drama, which may have significant implications for the political dynamics in Assam and beyond.
