Tura, March 11: Authorities imposed a curfew in parts of West Garo Hills district following violent clashes linked to the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections. The unrest resulted in the deaths of two people after police opened fire to control the situation.
According to officials, protests broke out during the nomination process for the district council elections, with demonstrators clashing with security forces. The situation escalated, prompting authorities to enforce a curfew and deploy additional security personnel to restore order in affected areas.
To prevent further unrest, the government also suspended mobile internet services temporarily and increased security patrols across sensitive locations. Security forces conducted flag marches in several areas to reassure residents and maintain peace.
Due to the tense law-and-order situation, the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) announced the postponement of two Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations scheduled in West Garo Hills. Officials stated that the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and examination staff amid the ongoing curfew restrictions.
Education authorities said new dates for the postponed examinations will be announced soon once the situation improves. Students and parents have been advised to remain calm and follow official updates from the board.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government has appealed for peace and urged residents to cooperate with authorities while efforts continue to restore normalcy in the district. Community leaders are also being consulted to help ease tensions and prevent further disturbances.
Officials expressed hope that stability will return soon so that public activities, including educational examinations, can resume without disruption.
