Dalit Man Murdered in Uttar Pradesh After Refusing Foot Massage from Coworkers

In a shocking incident that has brought to light the grim realities of caste-based violence in India, a 33-year-old Dalit man named Rajkumar, also known as Chhannu, was brutally beaten to death by three of his coworkers in Lalitpur district, Uttar Pradesh. The attack allegedly stemmed from Rajkumar’s refusal to massage the feet of his intoxicated colleagues during a drinking session.

The tragic event unfolded on Saturday when Rajkumar attended a party hosted at the residence of Samyak Rajnayak, 38, in the Civil Lines area. Alongside Rajkumar, two other coworkers—Gajendra Narwaria, 37, and Gaurav Raikwar, 25—were present. According to police reports, the three men, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, demanded that Rajkumar massage their feet, a customary gesture that carries significant cultural implications, particularly within the context of caste.

When Rajkumar declined their request, the situation escalated rapidly. Lalitpur’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Kalu Singh, stated that the three men turned violent, assaulting Rajkumar with a belt and an iron rod. The severity of the attack led to Rajkumar’s death on the spot, illustrating the extreme lengths to which these men were willing to go over a seemingly trivial request.

In a bid to conceal their crime, the accused allegedly moved Rajkumar’s lifeless body and discarded it on a roadside, attempting to make it appear as if he had been the victim of a traffic accident. Local authorities were alerted the following morning when passersby discovered an unconscious man on the ground near Varni Jain College, close to Gurunanak Dharamshala. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, doctors pronounced Rajkumar dead upon arrival.

The police have since launched a thorough investigation. Rajkumar’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death, while legal proceedings are set in motion. All three suspects have been apprehended and reportedly confessed to the crime, as stated by PTI.

This incident not only highlights the pervasive issue of caste discrimination but also raises unsettling questions about the safety and dignity of individuals from marginalized communities in India. Caste-based violence continues to plague the social fabric of the nation, demanding urgent attention and action from both the authorities and society at large. As the investigation progresses, many are calling for justice for Rajkumar and a re-evaluation of the societal norms that allow such heinous acts to persist.
