Driverless Tractor Hits The Market :: Farming Tasks Powered By AI – Developed By Punjab Agricultural University

Ludhiana, March 23 (IPU Media Update News): Farmers primarily rely on tractors for agricultural activities, however, operating one typically requires a driver. Now, a tractor capable of running without a driver has made its debut in Punjab. This innovative tractor eliminates the need for a driver to sit at the controls, as it performs plowing tasks entirely on its own.

** Driverless tractor stood out as a special attraction at the Kisan Mela **

A two-day Kisan Mela (Farmers’ Fair) was held from March 20 to 21 at the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana. Various agriculture-related products and equipment were showcased at the event. Among these exhibits, the driverless tractor—developed by the Punjab Agricultural University itself—stood out as a major attraction, captivating the attention of visitors. Attendees at the Kisan Mela were astonished to witness this tractor equipped with an automatic steering system, and they observed it with great curiosity. At the same time, the event highlighted the growing significance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of agriculture, noting that it has now secured a pivotal role in farming practices. Furthermore, farmers took the opportunity to inquire about and gather information regarding this advanced technology. In short, it is no exaggeration to say that the driverless tractor truly emerged as the standout attraction of the Kisan Mela.

** How Does This Driverless Tractor Function Using AI Technology -? **

Notably, the Punjab Agricultural University developed this GNSS-based auto-steering system for tractors (a driverless tractor) several years ago. This innovation by the Punjab Agricultural University is regarded as a significant step in the journey of farmers transitioning from traditional farming toward digital and precision agriculture. The auto-steering system is a computer-based method guided by satellites; it enables the tractor to operate automatically on its own. This system utilizes signals received from multiple satellites—processed through sensors and touch-screen controls—to guide tractors along precise, predetermined paths. This technology ensures that the tractor performs effectively even under low-light conditions. Ultimately, this driverless tractor saves both time and labor for farmers. “This tractor utilizes sensor-based technology for farming operations. It features an onboard screen that allows the user to divide the field into four distinct sections and plan the cultivation process accordingly. Once configured, the tractor’s auto-steering system operates autonomously. This ensures that no errors occur during the crop-sowing process. Farmers are extremely pleased with this technology. Cultivators can use this tractor to grow potatoes or engage in any other type of farming activity. Currently, the price of this tractor is approximately ₹4.5 lakhs; however, its cost may rise in the future. It is anticipated that all farmers will eventually have the opportunity to purchase one. This driverless tractor helps reduce operational costs for farmers while also saving valuable time. Many tractor drivers and farmers express the opinion that this driverless tractor is likely to gradually replace conventional tractors over time.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Varun, a professor at the Punjab Agricultural University, shared key insights regarding the driverless tractor. He noted that, at present, this technology is quite expensive; however, he stated that as demand for it increases, the technology is expected to become more affordable. He explained that this driverless tractor is equipped with a specialized geo-tagging device. This device records the tractor’s precise location, enabling it to efficiently plow the field. He further clarified that, in addition to plowing the land effectively, this technology also serves to save time for farmers.
