ED Conducts Raids on AAP MP Ashok Mittal's Properties Over Forex Violations

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a significant operation against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Ashok Mittal, raiding multiple locations linked to him in Punjab and Haryana. This move comes amid allegations of foreign exchange violations, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing scrutiny of political figures in India.

The raids took place on Wednesday, targeting Mittal’s residence as well as various associated premises, including the renowned Lovely Professional University located in Phagwara, Punjab. This institution is notable as Mittal is not only its founder but also serves as its chancellor. Additionally, the ED extended its investigations to Tetr College of Business and Masters Union College of Business in Gurugram, Haryana, both of which are linked to the Lovely Group, a conglomerate associated with Mittal.

Reports suggest that the central agency’s actions were prompted by inquiries into possible breaches of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The ED also searched properties associated with Mittal’s family members, including his brothers, Ramesh Mittal and Naresh Mittal, indicating the wide-ranging nature of this investigation.

These developments unfold just weeks after Mittal assumed the position of deputy leader of AAP in the Rajya Sabha, taking over from fellow party leader Raghav Chadha. This shift in leadership raises questions about the timing of the ED’s actions, especially with elections looming in Punjab, scheduled for next year.

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal has criticized the raids, suggesting they reflect a political strategy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the elections. Kejriwal remarked that the people of Punjab will not tolerate such tactics, hinting at the potential fallout of the ED’s actions on the political landscape in the region.

The investigation into Ashok Mittal could have broader implications for AAP, which has been under the microscope for various allegations since its rise to power in Punjab. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these developments will affect the party’s fortunes in the upcoming electoral battle.
