A Kolkata resident’s struggle with the electoral roll has not only deprived him of his voting rights but has also stalled his passport renewal application, shining a light on the challenges faced by many in West Bengal.
The ordeal began in March when the individual’s name was removed from the electoral roll for the Ballygunge constituency. This was reportedly due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, which failed to locate his name or that of his late father in the 2002 voters’ list. The deceased father, a respected Gandhian and former professor, was known for his dedication to social causes, making the omission from the rolls particularly perplexing.
As he reflects on this experience, the ex-editor expresses disbelief over how a dedicated voter like his father, who passed away in 2016, could have been omitted from such an important document. His case is not unique; nearly 27 lakh residents of West Bengal have encountered similar issues, categorized by officials as “logical discrepancies.” Despite submitting his matriculation certificate in a bid to rectify the situation, his appeal remains pending before a tribunal established following Supreme Court directives, leaving him feeling sidelined in a democratic process.
The implications of this electoral oversight have been far-reaching. Not only was he deprived of participating in the recent elections, but it has also significantly impacted his personal life. His passport renewal application, initiated with biometric formalities on March 19, 2026, has been stuck in limbo due to incomplete police verification linked to his electoral status. Although he has provided several alternative documents to confirm his identity and residency, authorities deemed them inadequate, prolonging his distress.
As of June 27, the situation has escalated, marking 100 days since he completed the biometric process. This troubling delay raises questions about the effectiveness of the electoral roll in ensuring that every citizen’s voice is heard and represented. It also highlights a larger systemic issue surrounding voter registration and the bureaucratic challenges many face when trying to maintain their civic rights.
