FIR Filed Against Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal Following Fatal Boiler Explosion in Chhattisgarh
A tragic incident at a Vedanta-owned power plant in Singhitarai village, Sakti district, has led to the filing of a first information report (FIR) against the company’s chairperson, Anil Agarwal, along with several others. The explosion, which occurred on Tuesday, claimed the lives of 20 individuals and left at least 15 others injured when a steel tube carrying superheated steam burst, engulfing workers during their lunch break.
Local authorities confirmed that the blast took place in Boiler-01 of the plant, and it was particularly devastating as workers were caught off guard while dining. The Sakti Superintendent of Police, Prafull Thakur, announced on Thursday that the FIR has been registered at the Dabhra police station. The charges include causing death by negligence and negligent handling of machinery, as specified under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
In the FIR, Agarwal is named among eight to ten individuals, and authorities indicated that further names may be added as the investigation progresses. Thakur emphasized the need for a thorough inquiry into the incident and mentioned that the police are currently awaiting critical reports, including post-mortem examinations of the deceased victims. A specialized technical team has also been constituted to ascertain the root cause of the explosion.
This catastrophic event highlights ongoing concerns regarding workplace safety standards in India’s industrial sector. The power plant’s management and regulatory bodies are under scrutiny, particularly since such incidents can have far-reaching implications on workers’ safety and operational practices in the industry. The fatalities have raised alarms among labor rights activists, prompting calls for stringent safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As investigations continue, the focus will be on understanding how such a dangerous failure occurred and what measures can be implemented to enhance safety protocols across industrial sites. The community, already mourning the loss of lives, is demanding accountability and justice for the victims and their families.
