Fraudulent UPI Transaction in Hyderabad Linked to Compromised Messaging Account

A recent incident in Hyderabad has highlighted concerns over rising digital fraud, where cybercriminals use compromised messaging accounts to target individuals.

According to available information, an employee became a victim of a fraudulent transaction after receiving a message on WhatsApp that appeared to be from his immediate superior. The message requested urgent financial assistance, stating that the amount would be returned later.

Believing the request to be genuine, the employee transferred ₹30,000 via a UPI payment using Google Pay to a number shared in the message.

The fraud came to light when the employee later spoke directly with his superior, who denied making any such request. It was then suspected that the messaging account had been compromised and used to impersonate him.

The incident has been reported, and relevant transaction details have been submitted as part of the complaint process.

Cybersecurity experts note that such cases often involve social engineering tactics, where attackers exploit trust and urgency to deceive victims.

Experts advise verifying financial requests through direct communication, avoiding immediate transfers based on messages alone, and enabling additional security measures such as two-factor authentication on digital platforms.

Authorities continue to caution users to remain vigilant as digital payment usage increases.
