Dr. Mohan Pradhan, a renowned orchid specialist from Sikkim, after eight years of dedicated research and systematic effort, has successfully developed a new hybrid orchid species. He has named this orchid “Seujia Kaziranga” or “Green Kaziranga.” The orchid is characterized by its light green shade, which inspired the name. According to Dr. Pradhan, the word “Seujia” in Assamese symbolizes greenery and vibrant nature, while “Kaziranga” pays tribute to the world-famous Kaziranga National Park. Because of its dominant green color and symbolic meaning, the orchid is popularly referred to as the “Green Kaziranga Orchid.”

The Chief Minister’s Office of Assam issued a statement noting that this orchid will enrich Assam’s biodiversity.

On a occassion at Kohora in Kaziranga, Assam’s Agriculture and Horticulture Department officially inaugurated the Kaziranga Orchid Park, built on 20 bighas of land at a cost of ₹16 crore. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma presided over the inauguration. Announcing the hybrid orchid, Dr. Sarma shared on his X handle that this is a proud moment for Assam. He praised Dr. Mohan Pradhan’s eight years of dedication that led to the creation of the beautiful hybrid orchid “Seujia Kaziranga,” and said that naming it after Kaziranga is a gesture that fills every Assamese heart with pride.

The Kaziranga Orchid Park houses conservation facilities for more than 900 indigenous and foreign orchid species. The Chief Minister’s Office described the unveiling of the “Seujia Kaziranga” orchid as a unique blend of science, identity, and nature conservation, giving the park inauguration an added significance. Experts also remarked that the orchid stands as a symbol of both scientific and cultural pride for Assam.
