India Ensures Steady Crude and Gas Supplies Amid West Asia Turmoil

The Indian government has assured citizens that the nation’s crude oil and gas supplies remain stable, even with the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, addressed the media on Wednesday, urging the public not to engage in panic buying. She emphasized that consumers can expect their domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders to be delivered within approximately two and a half days after booking.

Sharma highlighted a significant 25% increase in domestic LPG production, which is now prioritized for household usage. Meanwhile, supplies directed towards non-domestic sectors are being allocated to essential services such as hospitals and educational facilities. The official mentioned that while LPG prices have indeed risen due to global market pressures, government interventions have kept these costs from skyrocketing further. In Delhi, for instance, the price of a standard 14.2 kg domestic cylinder has now climbed to Rs 913, while a 19 kg commercial cylinder is selling for Rs 1,883.

India’s crude oil consumption stands at around 55 lakh barrels per day, and Sharma noted that the volumes secured recently have surpassed what is typically expected to flow through the crucial Strait of Hormuz during this period. Importantly, the government revealed that nearly 70% of the country’s crude imports now come through alternative routes, up from 55% previously, which significantly lowers the risk of supply disruptions.

In terms of refinery operations, Sharma reassured the public that Indian refineries are running at peak capacity, with some even exceeding 100% utilization. This proactive approach is crucial in maintaining stable energy supplies in the face of international uncertainties. As the situation in West Asia continues to evolve, the Indian government remains vigilant about safeguarding the energy needs of its citizens.
