The Indian government has firmly criticized the remarks made by American political commentator Michael Savage, which were amplified by former President Donald Trump on social media, labeling India as one of the ‘hellhole’ countries. This statement has been deemed ‘inappropriate’ and ‘in poor taste’ by officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
In a statement issued on Thursday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed that such comments are not only misguided but also do not accurately represent the robust and evolving relationship between India and the United States. ‘The remarks are obviously uninformed, inappropriate, and in poor taste. They certainly do not reflect the reality of the India-US relationship, which has long been based on mutual respect and shared interests,’ he asserted.
The controversial remarks originated during a segment on the US-based Newsmax channel, where Savage, an author and political commentator, made his comments following discussions in the Supreme Court regarding birthright citizenship in the United States. Birthright citizenship refers to the automatic granting of nationality to a child born on a country’s soil, irrespective of the parents’ citizenship or immigration status.
In a tweet earlier this week, Trump shared Savage’s comments about birthright citizenship, which included a statement that implied a negative view of countries like India and China. Savage said, ‘A baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring the entire family in from China or India or some other hellhole on the planet. You don’t have to go far to see that. English is not spoken here anymore.’ These remarks have sparked outrage and condemnation from various quarters, including Indian officials.
Following the backlash, a spokesperson from the US Embassy in India reiterated the importance of the India-US relationship, emphasizing that the views expressed by Savage do not reflect the sentiments of the American government.
