New Delhi, June 2026: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the state funeral and burial ceremonies of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, according to diplomatic sources. The invitation was reportedly conveyed through diplomatic channels to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
The funeral ceremonies are expected to be held in Iran from July 5 to July 9, with events scheduled in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad. However, the Government of India has not yet announced the level of representation it will send for the ceremonies.
Ayatollah Khamenei, who served as Iran’s Supreme Leader for several decades, played a significant role in shaping the country’s political and foreign policy direction. His death marks a major moment in Iran’s contemporary history and has drawn international attention.
India and Iran share longstanding historical, cultural and economic ties. Cooperation in areas such as energy, regional connectivity and the development of the Chabahar Port has contributed to the bilateral relationship over the years.
Diplomatic observers note that the funeral ceremonies are expected to be attended by leaders and representatives from several countries. India’s decision regarding participation is expected closer to the date of the event.
