Mamata Banerjee Takes Early Lead Over Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur as Vote Counting Progresses

As the counting of votes for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections unfolded on Monday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was seen leading against Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Suvendu Adhikari in the Bhabanipur constituency. At approximately 1:10 PM, Banerjee had established a lead of over 17,000 votes, having completed seven out of twenty rounds of counting, as indicated by the Election Commission’s data.

This election marks a significant moment for Banerjee, who briefly found herself trailing Adhikari during the initial rounds. The dynamic between these two political figures is particularly noteworthy, as their rivalry has been well-documented since the 2021 Assembly elections when Adhikari managed to defeat Banerjee directly in a high-stakes contest in Nandigram. In that election, Banerjee’s loss was a pivotal moment, leading to her subsequent victory in a bye-poll in Bhabanipur, a seat she has held since 2011.

As of the latest reports, Adhikari was maintaining a slight edge in the Nandigram constituency, leading TMC’s Pabitra Kar by more than 2,200 votes after five rounds of counting. This contest is also closely watched due to the historical significance of Nandigram, which has become a symbol of political conflict and electoral aspirations in West Bengal.

Moreover, the Election Commission had shared data for only two or fewer rounds of counting in 29 constituencies by 1:25 PM, reflecting the ongoing nature of the electoral process. This election has been particularly scrutinized due to discussions surrounding the revisions in the electoral rolls and the implications it might have on voter turnout and representation.

Adhikari, who was once a close associate of Banerjee, made a strategic shift to the BJP in 2020, becoming the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly. His move has been part of the larger narrative of BJP’s attempts to establish a stronger foothold in West Bengal, a state that has traditionally been a bastion for the TMC. Both candidates are under the public’s microscope as they embody contrasting political philosophies and voter bases.

The results in Bhabanipur and Nandigram will not only determine the political futures of Banerjee and Adhikari but will also serve as an indicator of the public’s sentiment towards the ruling government in West Bengal. As the counting continues, the political landscape in the state could be on the brink of yet another transformation.
