Manipur Tensions Rise as Kuki Injured Men Evacuated Under Security Amid Protests

In a tense turn of events in Manipur, three injured men from the Kuki community were relocated from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal late Wednesday night under heavy police protection. Their transfer followed two days of escalating protests that erupted over their treatment at the hospital.

The trio, who sustained injuries during a shooting incident in the Kangpokpi district, were admitted to the hospital on Monday by security forces. However, their presence sparked outrage among members of the Meitei and Naga communities. Protesters accused the injured men of being militants and demanded their immediate removal from the medical facility.

As tensions flared on Tuesday evening, a large crowd gathered outside the hospital, chanting slogans and attempting to breach the hospital’s gates. Law enforcement initially attempted to manage the situation, but as demonstrators grew increasingly unruly, they resorted to firing tear gas to disperse the crowd. Reports indicated that some protesters threw stones at the security personnel, prompting the use of force.

The injured individuals, identified as Genlenmang Vaiphei (18), Lunliandaw Vaiphei (20), and Paogou Lal (18), were part of a clash that occurred near the border of the Kuki-majority village of Leilon Vaiphei and the Naga-majority village of Konsakhul. One of the injured, Paogou Lal, is noted to have a background in sports, previously playing for Mohun Bagan, a well-renowned football club.

This incident is a continuation of the ongoing strife between the Kuki and Naga communities, which has been marked by heightened tensions and violence in recent months. The rivalry has deep cultural and historical roots, often flaring up over issues of land, identity, and political representation. The recent protests highlight the fragile state of peace in the region and the challenges faced in reconciling differences among the communities.

The authorities have not disclosed the destination of the injured men following their relocation, leaving many concerned about their safety and well-being. As the situation continues to unfold, local leaders and community representatives are urging for calm and dialogue to prevent further violence.
