Shillong, March 10: The Government of Meghalaya has announced a major environmental initiative aimed at protecting the state’s rich natural heritage. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma revealed that the state plans to conserve one lakh hectares of forest under the ambitious Green Meghalaya+ programme.
The initiative is designed to combat deforestation, preserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable management of forest resources across the state. According to the Chief Minister, the programme will focus on restoring degraded forest areas, increasing tree cover, and strengthening community participation in conservation efforts.
Speaking about the project, Sangma emphasized that protecting forests is essential for the future of Meghalaya. He noted that forests not only support wildlife and biodiversity but also play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, preventing soil erosion, and supporting the livelihoods of rural communities.
The Green Meghalaya+ initiative will involve local village communities, environmental groups, and government agencies working together to protect forest areas. Activities under the programme are expected to include afforestation drives, awareness campaigns, and sustainable forest management practices.
Environmental experts and community leaders have welcomed the move, stating that the programme could significantly contribute to the preservation of Meghalaya’s forests if implemented effectively. Many believe that community participation will be the key factor in ensuring long-term success.
Meghalaya is known for its lush green hills, dense forests, and unique biodiversity. With the launch of Green Meghalaya+, the state government hopes to set an example of environmentally responsible development while safeguarding its natural ecosystems for future generations.
