For more than a century, Mussoorie has evolved through different modes of transport. From walking trails and hand-pulled rickshaws to taxis, scooters and golf carts, each era has introduced new ways for residents and visitors to navigate the hill town.
Now, electric autos may become the latest addition to Mussoorie’s transport network.
This week, the local administration conducted trial runs of Mahindra electric autos on Mussoorie’s steep roads and challenging gradients. According to officials, the trials were carried out under the supervision of SDM Rahul Anand and Municipal Executive Officer Gaurav Bhasin to assess the vehicles’ suitability for the town’s terrain and road conditions.
If the trials continue to deliver positive results, authorities are considering the introduction of e-auto shuttle services on key routes, including Shuttle Parking–Mall Road, Mall Road–Company Garden and Kingcraig–Picture Palace–Library. The proposed initiative aims to provide an affordable, convenient and environmentally friendly transport option while helping manage traffic congestion.
The proposal has generated mixed reactions among residents and visitors.
Supporters believe electric autos could offer cleaner, quieter and more accessible transportation, particularly for senior citizens, families and tourists who often find Mussoorie’s steep roads difficult to navigate. Others question whether adding another category of vehicles will genuinely ease congestion or contribute to existing traffic challenges.
Mussoorie is not alone in exploring electric mobility solutions. Similar initiatives have been introduced in hill destinations such as Manali, Nainital and Shimla as authorities seek sustainable transport alternatives.
Experience from these towns suggests that success depends not only on the vehicles themselves but also on effective planning and management. A well-organised shuttle system integrated with designated parking areas could potentially reduce pressure on crowded roads while improving local mobility.
Officials have also indicated that electric autos are being explored as a practical alternative following operational and licensing challenges faced by earlier golf-cart initiatives.
For now, the electric autos remain in the trial phase. While the vehicles have demonstrated their ability to navigate Mussoorie’s terrain, the long-term success of the project will depend on whether it can make travel within the town safer, smoother and more efficient for both residents and visitors.
