A female resident doctor from Nagaland was allegedly harassed, racially abused, and physically assaulted near the campus of AIIMS Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, sparking widespread concern over the safety of medical professionals and individuals from Northeast India working across the country.
Incident Details
According to police officials, the incident occurred when the doctor, a postgraduate resident in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, was returning to the institute after visiting a nearby shopping area. The accused allegedly followed her for nearly 1.5 kilometres before confronting and harassing her on the road.
The victim reported that the men used racial slurs and behaved aggressively, creating fear and distress. She later filed a formal complaint with local authorities.
Police Action
Following the complaint, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections related to harassment, assault, and offences against women. Authorities confirmed that two suspects have been arrested and further investigation is underway.
Police officials stated that CCTV footage and witness statements are being examined to establish the full sequence of events.
Clarification on Allegations
While social media posts initially circulated claims describing the incident as rape, officials and early investigation reports have indicated allegations of harassment and sexual assault, with no confirmed rape charge publicly verified at this stage. Authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information while the investigation continues.
