In a historic first for Meghalaya, a train carrying a consignment of legally mined coal departed the state through Mendipathar Railway Station in North Garo Hills on Sunday. The coal, originating from a licensed quarry in Shallang, West Khasi Hills, travelled approximately 120 km via Rongjeng, Songsak, and Soksan before being loaded onto 42 containers (rakes) destined for New Delhi. The first batch consisted of nearly 2,500 metric tonnes, flagged off by Mendipathar legislator Marthon J. Sangma.
