Assam Begins Flood Relief Distribution; Over 62,000 Families Receive ₹15,000 Interim Aid

In a major relief initiative for flood-affected residents, the Assam government has started distributing ₹15,000 as interim financial assistance to more than 62,000 families through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. The assistance is aimed at helping families meet immediate needs as they recover from the recent devastating floods.

The first phase of the relief package covers families in some of the worst-affected districts, including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the financial assistance programme, stating that the government is committed to ensuring timely support reaches every eligible beneficiary.

Alongside the financial aid, the state government has initiated a comprehensive damage assessment survey to evaluate losses suffered by households. Officials will inspect damaged homes, crops, livestock, and other properties to determine compensation under existing disaster relief norms. The survey findings will be used to provide additional financial assistance to those who have suffered extensive losses.

According to the government, the relief amount has been credited directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts, ensuring transparency and faster delivery of assistance. Authorities have also urged eligible families to verify their bank details and cooperate with survey teams during the compensation assessment process.

Despite improvements in flood conditions in several areas, thousands of people continue to face the challenges of damaged homes, disrupted livelihoods, and loss of agricultural land. Relief and rehabilitation efforts are ongoing, with the administration focusing on restoring essential services and supporting affected communities in rebuilding their lives.
