Assam Government Begins ₹15,000 Interim Relief for Over 62,000 Flood-Affected Families

Assam: In a major relief initiative for flood-affected residents, the Assam government has started distributing ₹15,000 as interim financial assistance to more than 62,000 families through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. The assistance is intended to help affected families meet their immediate needs as they recover from the recent floods.

The first phase of the relief package covers families in some of the worst-affected districts, including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the financial assistance programme and said the government is working to ensure that timely support reaches eligible beneficiaries.

Alongside the financial assistance, the state government has initiated a detailed damage assessment survey to evaluate losses suffered by affected households. Officials will assess damage to houses, crops, livestock, and other properties to determine compensation under applicable disaster relief norms.

The findings of the damage assessment survey will be used to identify families that may be eligible for additional financial assistance based on the extent of their losses.

According to the government, the relief amount is being credited directly to beneficiaries' bank accounts through the DBT system. Authorities have also advised eligible families to verify their bank details and cooperate with survey teams during the assessment process.

Although flood conditions have improved in several areas, many people continue to face challenges caused by damaged homes, disrupted livelihoods, and losses to agricultural land. Relief and rehabilitation measures are ongoing, with the administration focusing on restoring essential services and supporting affected communities.
