22 BRS MLAs Suspended for Remainder of Telangana Assembly Monsoon Session

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Assembly witnessed another confrontation between the ruling Congress and the Opposition BRS on Wednesday, with 22 BRS MLAs, including party working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) and senior leader T. Harish Rao, suspended for the remainder of the Monsoon Session.

The action followed three consecutive days of disruption in the House. The developments came amid a dispute over allegations concerning the treatment of BRS women legislators by police during a protest outside the Assembly.

Protest Outside Assembly Leads to Further Confrontation

The latest developments followed Monday's protest by BRS legislators, including KTR and Harish Rao, who were detained after attempting to enter the Assembly premises wearing black T-shirts as a mark of protest against the Congress government.

The BRS alleged that police behaved aggressively towards its women legislators during the protest and demanded that the matter be examined. The issue subsequently continued to be raised during Assembly proceedings, with BRS members seeking an urgent discussion.

The Telangana High Court had also directed the DGP not to prevent BRS legislators from entering the Assembly to attend proceedings, following allegations concerning police conduct.

Government Defends Disciplinary Action

The Congress government defended the suspension as a disciplinary measure in response to repeated disruption of Assembly proceedings. Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu moved the suspension motion after BRS legislators continued their protest in the Well of the House. Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar subsequently announced the suspensions.

The BRS criticised the action and alleged that the government was restricting the Opposition's ability to raise issues in the Assembly. The party is expected to continue raising the matter as a political and legislative issue.

Separate Controversy Involving BRS MLCs

The confrontation has also coincided with a separate controversy involving alleged remarks against Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar. Two BRS MLCs, T. Madhusudhan and N. Naveen Kumar Reddy, were arrested over allegations concerning remarks against the Speaker. A court later rejected the police remand request and released them on personal bonds.

Political Confrontation Continues

The developments have added to the ongoing differences between the Congress government and the BRS during the Monsoon Session.

While the government has maintained that legislative proceedings must be conducted without disruption, the BRS has questioned the suspension of its legislators and said it will continue to raise issues concerning the Opposition's role in the Assembly.

The political dispute remains ongoing, with both sides presenting different positions on the events that led to the suspensions.
