Bihar Flood Crisis Deepens as 34.31 Lakh People Are Affected

Patna, September 8, 2026: Bihar’s flood situation worsened on Tuesday, with around 34.31 lakh people affected across 13 districts, according to officials. Floodwaters have impacted 480 gram panchayats, including areas in Patna, Bhagalpur, Vaishali, Saran, Begusarai, Khagaria and Munger.

The situation has raised fresh concerns after the Ganga crossed its previous highest flood level at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur. The river reached 36.80 metres at 8 am, exceeding the previous high of 36.75 metres recorded in August 2021. Several other rivers, including the Gandak, Kosi, Budhi Gandak, Punpun, Bagmati and Ghaghra, are also flowing above danger levels at different locations.

Authorities have intensified rescue and relief operations. Twenty-seven SDRF teams and 10 NDRF teams have been deployed, while 1,832 boats are being used for evacuation and transportation. The government is also operating 432 community kitchens and 14 relief camps for affected residents.

Officials continue to monitor river levels and downstream areas as relief and rescue operations remain underway.
