The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Punjab strategy is entering a new phase after the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) signalled that it is open to an electoral understanding with the BJP but will not join an alliance led by Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Punar Surjit president Giani Harpreet Singh said any arrangement with the BJP would have to be based on a clearly defined agenda concerning Punjab and Panthic issues. The party has also indicated openness to working with other Panthic formations.

The BJP, meanwhile, has indicated that it is willing to explore an understanding with Punar Surjit and other groups while continuing preparations for an Assembly contest across all 117 constituencies. The two positions are therefore not necessarily contradictory at this stage: BJP can continue building an independent statewide organisation while keeping alliance options open.

No final seat-sharing agreement has been announced. The immediate significance lies in the widening of BJP’s strategic choices after its earlier break with the traditional Akali alliance structure.

The coming weeks will show whether discussions develop into a common programme, a seat-sharing arrangement and joint campaign activity. Until then, BJP’s 117-seat preparation and the emerging Punar Surjit channel should be treated as parallel strategic options rather than as a concluded alliance.
