NEW DELHI — In a major strategic move aimed at modernising India's national air power, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has informed Parliament that India has initiated “concerted efforts” to explore participation in the French-led 6th-generation air combat development initiative, known as the Future Combat Air System (FCAS).

The development was outlined in the Twenty-Fifth Report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence (2025–26), presented in the Lok Sabha.

Key Highlights of the Report

• Leapfrogging Technologies: The Ministry of Defence has outlined a strategy to bridge air-capability gaps by moving from existing 4.5-generation and 5th-generation platforms towards advanced 6th-generation aerial combat technologies.
• The French Connection: Led by France, the FCAS programme is aimed at developing next-generation combat capabilities, including advanced stealth technologies, artificial intelligence, human-unmanned teaming, drone swarms and networked avionics.
• Parallel to AMCA: India's exploration of 6th-generation technologies through FCAS would complement, rather than replace, its indigenous 5th-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, which is being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).

Strategic Context: Rafale Proposal & Domestic Manufacturing

The development comes amid progress on India's requirement for 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA).

• French Commercial Bid: French authorities have submitted a technical and commercial proposal to India in response to the country's requirement for 114 Rafale fighter jets.
• Local Production: The proposed framework includes significant manufacturing and industrial participation in India. The precise production arrangement remains subject to evaluation and government approval.
• Indigenous Integration: Indian defence authorities and the Indian Air Force are evaluating options for integrating indigenous weapons and systems, including variants of the Astra air-to-air missile.
