Mukesh Ambani: Early Life, Business Career and Reliance Industries

Mukesh D. Ambani is an Indian businessman and the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a diversified company with interests in energy, petrochemicals, retail, telecommunications and digital services.

Early Life and Education

Mukesh Ambani was born on April 19, 1957, in Aden, which is now part of Yemen, to Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani. His family later moved to India, where his father developed a trading business that eventually grew into Reliance Industries.

He attended Hill Grange High School in Mumbai and studied at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, where he earned a degree in chemical engineering. He subsequently enrolled in an MBA programme at Stanford University in the United States but left before completing it to join his family's business.

Role in Reliance Industries

Mukesh Ambani joined Reliance in the early 1980s and worked on expanding its manufacturing operations. He played a significant role in the company's backward integration, extending its activities from textiles and polyester fibres into petrochemicals, petroleum refining and related industries.

He also led the development of Reliance's Jamnagar refinery complex in Gujarat, which became one of the world's largest refining hubs.

Family Business Division and Diversification

Following Dhirubhai Ambani's death in 2002, differences arose between Mukesh Ambani and his younger brother, Anil Ambani, over the family's business interests. In 2005, their mother, Kokilaben Ambani, helped mediate a division of the business interests between the two brothers.

Under Mukesh Ambani's leadership, Reliance expanded into organised retail, telecommunications, digital services and newer technology-related sectors.

Launch and Growth of Jio

Reliance launched its Jio telecom services commercially in 2016. The company expanded its mobile connectivity and digital service offerings across India. According to Jio's published figures, Reliance Jio Infocomm served approximately 524.4 million customers as of March 31, 2026.

Next-Generation Leadership and Artificial Intelligence

In 2023, Reliance Industries' board recommended the appointment of Mukesh Ambani's children—Akash Ambani, Isha Ambani and Anant Ambani—to the company's board of directors. Their appointments formed part of the company's next-generation leadership transition.

Reliance has also announced investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure, including plans for AI-focused data centres and computing capacity in India. These initiatives are part of its broader expansion into emerging technologies and digital infrastructure.

Mukesh Ambani continues to lead Reliance Industries as it operates across energy, retail, digital connectivity and technology-related businesses.
