# Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge sworn in as 45th Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court **Kolkata, September 9, 2026:** Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge was sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday. West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office to Justice Ghuge at a ceremony held in Kolkata. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, state ministers, MLAs and members of the legal fraternity were among those present at the ceremony. Justice Ghuge's appointment comes after the Calcutta High Court had been functioning under an Acting Chief Justice following the retirement of Justice Sujoy Paul in June 2026. Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice during the intervening period. The Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Ghuge for the post of Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, and the appointment was subsequently approved by the President. Justice Ghuge, who was serving as Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, was appointed to head the Calcutta High Court. Justice Ravindra V. Ghuge began his legal career in 1990 and has extensive experience as a lawyer and judge. Before his elevation to the Calcutta High Court, he served as a judge of the Bombay High Court and subsequently as its Acting Chief Justice. His appointment is expected to provide regular leadership to the Calcutta High Court and ensure continuity in its judicial administration.
