Cauvery Water Dispute: Differences Emerge Among Kannada Organisations Over Karnataka Bandh

Bengaluru: The Cauvery water dispute is entering a new political phase in Karnataka, with differences emerging among pro-Kannada organisations over the bandh called for Thursday.

The Cauvery Water Management Authority has directed Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days from August 12. The state government has objected to the quantum and is considering its legal and political response.

The fresh complication is the response on the ground. While some Kannada organisations have backed the bandh and are demanding stronger action on the Cauvery issue, others are questioning the need for a shutdown, pointing to improved rainfall and reservoir conditions in parts of the Cauvery basin.
