Dhanteras

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. It is observed on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. On this auspicious occasion, devotees worship Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera. According to tradition, people purchase gold, silver, utensils, vehicles and other valuable items on Dhanteras, associating the day with prosperity and good fortune.

Significance of Dhanteras

According to Hindu religious beliefs, Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped on Dhanteras for health, happiness and prosperity. The festival is also associated with the legend of Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the cosmic ocean. According to the traditional account, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean carrying a pot of amrita, or nectar of immortality.

On Dhanteras, people traditionally clean and decorate their homes. Diyas, candles, flowers and other decorative items are used to prepare homes for the festival. In the evening, many families perform prayers dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Dhanvantari and Lord Kubera.

Dhanteras and the Samudra Manthan Legend

The religious significance of Dhanteras is closely linked with the traditional story of Samudra Manthan. According to the legend, the devas and asuras churned the cosmic ocean in their quest for amrita. During the churning, several divine treasures are said to have emerged, including Goddess Lakshmi.

According to Hindu scriptures and traditional beliefs, Lord Dhanvantari subsequently appeared carrying a kalash of amrita. He is associated with Lord Vishnu and is traditionally regarded as the divine figure connected with Ayurveda and the science of healthy living.

Thus, Dhanteras is associated not only with wealth and prosperity but also with health and well-being. Traditions such as worship, home decoration and the purchase of valuable items continue to be observed by people across different parts of India according to their customs and beliefs.
