Displaying Caller Name Made Mandatory – Central Government Directive To Telecom Companies

Caller Name Display to Become Mandatory on Mobile Phones from November 1, 2026

New Delhi, October 16, 2026: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed telecom operators to introduce Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) across India from November 1, 2026. The service will display the caller's name alongside their phone number on the recipient's screen, helping users identify incoming calls.

Under the new system, the name recorded in the caller's telecom operator database will be displayed for unsaved domestic numbers. If the number is already saved in the recipient's contacts, the saved contact name will take precedence. The service is intended to operate without requiring users to install third-party caller identification applications.

In the initial phase, CNAP will be implemented on wireless networks using 4G and higher-generation technologies. For international calls, the display will show the label "International Call". The names of callers who have opted for Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR) will not be displayed. The implementation of the service on 2G, 3G and landline networks will be considered separately.

Business and bulk connection users may be allowed to display a preferred business name, provided it is supported by a registered trademark or a trade name registered on the GST portal. Telecom operators are required to verify the relevant documents before approving the display name.

The initiative aims to improve caller identification and help address fraudulent calls, spam and unwanted commercial communications. Telecom operators are also required to establish a time-bound grievance redressal mechanism for complaints related to CNAP.
