Marshaghai Farmers Concerned Over Heavy Rain Threat to Paddy Crop

Marshaghai, Kendrapara, September 22, 2026: Farmers in Marshaghai block of Odisha's Kendrapara district have expressed concern over the possibility of further heavy rainfall affecting their standing paddy crop.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on September 22 that a deep depression over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal was moving west-northwestwards and was expected to cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast by the night of September 23. The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds in parts of Odisha.

For Kendrapara, the IMD forecast heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of around 40–50 kmph on September 22 and 23. The district had already recorded 34 mm of rainfall in the preceding 24-hour period, according to the IMD.

Farmers in Marshaghai said they were worried that additional rain and strong winds could damage paddy that had recently withstood prolonged waterlogging in low-lying agricultural fields. They said another crop loss could increase financial pressure on farming households that have incurred expenses on seeds, fertilisers and labour.

Some farmers have urged the district administration to issue clear local advisories and take precautionary measures for crop protection. They have also sought proper assessment of any crop damage and appropriate assistance for farmers affected by the weather.

The situation will depend on the actual rainfall and wind conditions in the coming days. Farmers have been advised to follow the latest weather information and directions issued by the IMD and local authorities.
