Centre Directs Airlines to Alert Passengers About Flight Delays and Cancellations Ahead of Winter Fog Season

Ahead of the upcoming winter fog season, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed airlines to keep passengers informed about flight delays, cancellations and revised departure timings to minimise inconvenience.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the fog season is expected to last from December 15, 2026, to February 15, 2027. The ministry held its first fog-preparedness meeting for the 2026–27 winter season on October 27 to review operational readiness and coordination among aviation stakeholders.

Airlines have been instructed to notify passengers through SMS, email and mobile applications so that travellers can check their flight status before leaving for the airport. They have also been asked to ensure the availability of qualified crew and aircraft compliant with low-visibility operating requirements, prepare realistic flight schedules and take timely decisions regarding disruptions.

Airlines must ensure adequate staffing at airport help desks and customer helplines to address passenger queries during delays, cancellations and rescheduling. Ground-handling teams have also been asked to maintain efficient baggage management, aircraft turnaround and passenger assistance.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will oversee regulatory compliance and verify whether aircraft and crew are prepared for low-visibility operations.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and airport operators have been directed to ensure the readiness of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and Runway Visual Range (RVR) equipment, maintain airside safety and provide adequate terminal capacity during periods of poor visibility.

The ministry has also emphasised the importance of reliable weather forecasts and timely updates from the IMD to support operational planning. Air Traffic Control teams and air navigation service providers have been instructed to follow low-visibility procedures, coordinate traffic management and ensure safe aircraft movements.

Authorities have also highlighted the need for orderly passenger movement and appropriate assistance during operational disruptions, including prolonged delays and cancellations.

These measures aim to strengthen operational preparedness, improve coordination among aviation stakeholders and minimise passenger inconvenience during the winter fog season.
